The doctoral program at the University of Pennsylvania provides students with broad training in the history of art and its critical approaches, yet also focused training in their selected fields. Students completing the Ph.D. are well prepared for teaching positions at the university and college level and for curatorial positions in museums and galleries.
Students who have completed their M.A. in art history at Penn State and wish to proceed with doctoral studies at Penn State must also apply to the Ph.D. program (submit new statement of purpose, recent writing sample, and three new letters of recommendation (preferably from faculty members who may be on your future doctoral committee)).
The Ph.D. is awarded upon successful completion of the dissertation. Applicants with Master's degrees in history of allied disciplines may receive up to eight units of credit toward the Penn Ph.D. degree. As part of the Ph.D. program, students can also receive a Certificate in World History upon completion of certain requirements.

As of December 2015, the University of Pennsylvania requires open access publication of PhD dissertations in ScholarlyCommons. Prior to that date, dissertations were made openly available at the author's request. If you would like to make your pre-2015 Penn dissertation available, please contact the repository manager.
Students who enter the Penn graduate history program with approved graduate-level credits from another institution will normally take the examinations before the start of the third year of graduate study at Penn. The examination shall be comprised of at least three fields, chosen in consultation with the student’s advisory committee.
